Military Bulletin Board
Stamford’s new Postmaster, Andrea Dallas, has approved the installation of a bulletin board in the Springdale Post Office honoring all past and present military members from Springdale. If you know someone in the military, and would like to have their picture posted, please leave it at the Springdale Post Office counter (attention: Lisa Landone, Customer Relations Coordinator).
Please spread the word on this great opportunity to pay tribute to the members of our military!

Recycling Program Update
On July 20, 2011, Dan Colleluori, Supervisor of Solid Waste & Recycling, updated the Board of Representatives on the impact of single-stream recycling:
"July 1, 2011 marks the second anniversary of Stamford’s conversion to single-stream recycling. Since embarking on the “One Bin, All In” campaign, Stamford has increased it’s recycling 64% from 5,870 tons to 9983 tons, saving the City this past fiscal year $750,000 in garbage haulaway expenses.
The 9983 recycling tons from this year reflects a 24% diversion rate compared to 13% two years ago for all collected garbage and 2010/11 fiscal year savings of $750k that was not spent on waste disposal. In the fiscal year we also collected an additional $195k in revenue from Willimantic Waste for payment of our recycling commodities.
While we had this increase in recycling tonnage this past year, we showed a decrease of 791 tons in our MSW collected tonnage, which reflects an additional savings of $59,500.
This past year was the initial year of our new free electronic recycling program which diverted 217.6 tons of electronics out of our waste stream. Combining the diversion of 8.2 tons of clothing in our Goodwill/Big Brother containers, plus 1.45 tons of fluorescent bulbs and batteries, and 6.53 tons of car batteries has resulted in a combined savings of an additional $17,500."

Re-Districting
The Re-Districting process has begun. As you may know, a lay committee of Republican and Democrats (non-board members) examine the census numbers and take part in the re-districting process. Those who take part should have a very good sense of the city, its current layout, and its districts. If anyone would like to volunteer, please contact Art Layton at 203-325-4688 or Mary Fedeli at 203-353-0405.
Train Station Parking - Springdale and Stamford
On February 7, a bill was approved by the City to raise parking rates at the Springdale Station to $5 a day. Representative Art Layton moved an amendment to delay the start of the $5 rate until March 1, 2012, and the measure passed with the help and support of Mary Fedeli (R-17) and others on the Board of Representatives. As a result, those in our community now have a year to anlayze the rate change and organize opposition to keep this increase from going into effect next year.
Additionally, in response to complaints that drivers at the Stamford Station garage are unable to pay with credit card when exiting, Representative Layton will be working with our State Representatives and the Department of Transportation on a way to allow credit card payment in the future. We will provide more details as they become available.
Train Station Canopy Construction
The train station canopy project, which started in March 2010, is now complete as scheduled! As our many train commuters know, the station has been improved drastically. Below are just a couple of pictures showing the new Springdale Station.

Crosswalk Improvement
Thanks to the efforts of a concerned resident and the Springdale Neighborhood Association, the crosswalk at the intersection of Clearview Avenue and Hope Street (leading to the train station) has been repaired. The lines have been repainted and the crossing sign put back in place. Given the increased use of the crosswalk during the train station construction, we are glad that the City of Stamford stepped in to make these needed improvements.
We also want to remind residents that they can bring similar concerns to the attention of the City by calling (203) 977-4140 or by visiting the City's Citizens Service website.
